Kingdom leadership
This is the talk Jack Guerin, house church leader New Zealand, gave at the OIKOS Australia AGM on 15th January.
This is for leaders, not-yet-leaders and those who are looking for leaders - in the context of simple/organic/house churches. I want to answer these questions; what did Jesus say about Christian leadership? What do we do when we need to change our leadership style? How can we recognise and release new leaders? Missional Communities Australia – workshop in Melbourne
www.missionalcommunity.com.au
‘There is a wave of interest about the current missional movement that has been bubbling up over the last 10-15 years – however, unless we are able to disciple people well, any missional movement is unsustainable” (Rich Robinson, U.K.)
In this workshop the team from 3dm UK will share how over the last 20 years they have learned to use Huddles (a discipleship vehicle) and Missional Communities (a missional vehicle) to see discipleship and mission come alive in church communities in the UK, Europe and the USA. These lessons have been learned in post-Christian contexts where as few as 1% of people attend church.
The workshop will have teaching, discussion, breakout time with your team, worship, networking, the chance to actually experience Huddles and hear the key principles of Missional Communities. With social time built in, it will be a great way to build relationship as well as get input from the team. If you’re interested in seeing some different approaches to discipleship and mission, this workshop would be great place for you and your team to begin to think about what it means for you.

The human desire for ‘certainty’
“Faith is believing what you know ain’t true” Mark Twain.
No. No. No. Not so! Faith is trust and we need evidence for trust! That is how we live, e.g., we trust surgeons and flight captains with our lives. We trust that others will obey the road rules when we drive. We cant see it but we trust in the power of electricity. We base such trust on evidence. Reality is that which is actually there even when you don’t believe in it and it’s an absolute certainty that disbelieving in God won’t make Him go away. However it is fashionable in some circles to say “nothing is certain”. But there is this human desire for ‘certainty’. It’s everywhere. Here’s a good example. In John’s biography of Jesus, Thomas was told by the others, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” But then eight days later Jesus appeared and said to Thomas “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” The record says that Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” And Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? How blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
I wonder if Thomas actually put in his finger or his hand to Jesus’ wounds, evidence of who he was, evidence of his suffering and death, and of course, of his bodily resurrection? One day I will find out.

Mobile phone evangelism
Received from the Communigram of Paul & Bunty Collins. http://paulbunty.blogspot.com
Mobile phone evangelism is becoming more and more urgent. Recent figures reveal that 500 million in China have mobile phones and 400 million have them in India. We have just received a communication from one of our students who wants to do a major thrust of evangelism through the mobile phone in Rwanda. He says that almost everyone in Rwanda has a mobile phone. There is no doubt this aspect of communication is becoming a major opportunity to spread the Gospel. We are seeking to encourage our body of 30,000 OBC students around the world to be part of this communication explosion.
Letting go of old hurts
Henri Nouwen Meditation:
One of the hardest things in life is to let go of old hurts. We often say, or at least think: “What you did to me and my family, my ancestors, or my friends I cannot forget or forgive. … One day you will have to pay for it.” Sometimes our memories are decades, even centuries, old and keep asking for revenge. Holding people’s faults against them often creates an impenetrable wall. But listen to Paul: “For anyone who is in Christ, there is a new creation: the old order is gone and a new being is there to see. It is all God’s work” (2 Corinthians 5:17-18). Indeed, we cannot let go of old hurts, but God can. Paul says: “God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not holding anyone’s fault against them” (2 Corinthians 5:19). It is God’s work, but we are God’s ministers, because the God who reconciled the world to God entrusted to us “the message of reconciliation” (2 Corinthians 5:19). This message calls us to let go of old hurts in the Name of God. It is the message our world most needs to hear.

Being a missionary where you work
From www.ausprayernet.org.au
Os Hillman, director of the International Coalition of Workplace Ministries, believes that revival in the nation will come by way of Christians purposefully bringing their faith into the 9-to-5 window. “The Kingdom is going to advance through commerce, science, the arts, and education. If all we ever tell people is that to be really holy you’ve got to have a job in the church, we’re going to continue to forfeit our influence in those areas. To see meaningful transformation of our communities we must equip, empower, and affirm those in the market place who have the ability and authority to make changes in our culture” Hillman said.
